JD — the work
About the role
You would create the AI behind quality evaluations, data collection, RL environments, and client APIs, from agent design and pipelines all the way up to the screens people use. Most of the work is backend, covering embeddings, crawling, synthetic data, and evaluation, but you would also ship front-end tools and game-like experiences when needed. The company is early, the team is about 20 people working on-site in San Francisco, and much of what you build starts from a blank page.
What you'll do
- Build agent scaffolding, memory, and feedback loops that let agents get better over time
- Create synthetic data generators, eval pipelines, and grading approaches for subjective domains with no single right answer
- Run embedding and retrieval services that hold up under millions of calls
- Collect visual content at web scale with crawlers and scrapers
- Serve models and expose APIs that power customer-facing products
- Build internal tooling for data ops plus tools that expert labelers use
- Create game-like product experiences such as quizzes, leaderboards, and reward flows
What they're looking for
- 4+ years of engineering, with time spent building at startups between pre-seed and Series C
- Comfort operating with ambiguity and owning work end to end
- Shipped agent systems and LLM products, whether in a job, open-source work, or substantial side projects
- Real curiosity about aesthetic judgment, a subtle, open-ended problem you find exciting rather than frustrating
- Inventive problem solving: you enjoy creating new systems rather than tuning existing ones
Nice to have
- Open-source work or side projects you built simply because you were curious
- Background at a creative-software company or one known for web crawling, search indexing, or AI training data
