JD — the work
About the role
As CTO you would set the technical direction and run engineering for a well-funded, early-stage applied AI safety lab in San Francisco. Together with the founders, you would build evaluations that expose where AI breaks legal rules, environments for training models to avoid those failures, and live guardrails that keep production systems compliant, beginning in financial services. The role combines hands-on building with hiring and growing the engineering team.
What you'll do
- Design RL environments that measure where AI goes wrong on legal questions in financial services
- Turn the research prototype into production guardrails that early partner companies can run live
- Decide system architecture and the research agenda jointly with the founders
- Recruit and mentor roughly three to six engineers over your first twelve months
- Stay close to partner companies, adapting to their feedback as you build the core platform
What they're looking for
- 5+ years of engineering experience and readiness to own technical vision as CTO
- Ability to lead engineering while staying hands-on with research and infrastructure
- Ability to recruit and mentor a growing engineering team
- Comfort turning AI safety research into production systems for customers
- Working knowledge of Python, TypeScript, AWS, Kubernetes, and PostgreSQL
- Availability to work on-site in San Francisco
