JD — the work
About the role
This director leads and scales several product engineering squads for a quickly growing education technology company that is changing how schools build teacher and student schedules. Reporting to the co-founding CTO, you would own product engineering as a whole as the company enters its next growth stage. It is hands-on at first, roughly half coding and half leadership, shifting toward mostly leadership over time. The engineering team is remote and spread across time zones, some of them outside the US.
What you'll do
- Run several squads directly, covering the scheduling experience, reporting, and elementary schools, including their people and delivery
- Stay hands-on early by coding, reviewing, and pairing, starting near 50/50 and moving to about 80/20 leadership
- Drive the major architecture calls that keep the platform sturdy and ready to scale over the coming couple of years
- Set squad goals with product and customer-facing teams, so engineering work maps clearly onto business results
- Ship high-value features, including new AI capabilities, before the March to August scheduling season
What they're looking for
- 5+ years of engineering and at least 2 to 3 years leading several teams of six or more engineers
- Still technical enough to write code and give real code reviews
- Solid backend architecture background and quick uptake of the current stack: Python, TypeScript, React, MongoDB, and AWS
- Background at startups or fast-growing companies, setting your own priorities amid ambiguity with little scaffolding
- Ability to explain engineering choices in terms of business impact and keep cross-functional partners aligned
Nice to have
- Having grown teams and managed managers before
