JD — the work
About the role
This manager is accountable for how one pod of about six to eight engineers performs, grows, and delivers at a company automating mortgage loan origination with AI. It is a hands-on role: you still spend about 10 to 20 percent of your time coding, manage with care and candor, and team up with PMs and tech leads. The domain is complex and high-stakes, and the whole team works remotely.
What you'll do
- Lead six to eight engineers through 1:1s, regular feedback, hiring, performance plans, exits, and career development
- Run the pod's rhythm of planning and retrospectives, watch delivery health, and flag risk early
- Keep coding for 10 to 20 percent of your time, landing one or two PRs a week
- Decide priorities and major technical choices together with PMs and tech leads, keeping other teams aligned
- Get new hires productive quickly and keep docs and team ownership lines crisp
What they're looking for
- 8+ years in engineering with a real progression from engineer to senior to staff or management
- Real line management of at least five engineers, covering hiring, exits, PIPs, and reviews, not just tech leadership
- Current hands-on TypeScript, strong enough for a live coding round in TypeScript only
- An AI-forward approach: you use AI tools in your own work and expect your team to do the same
- Management experience at startups or smaller companies, not only at very large corporations
