About the role
You would manage one of the main product engineering squads at a company bringing modern software to county and local government offices. The role suits someone who leads from the keyboard, thinks about the product, and likes a fast startup pace: you set clear technical direction, write code and shape designs yourself, and build a culture where engineers own their work and do it well. The position is fully remote from Canada.
What you'll do
- Manage a team of three to seven software engineers, coaching them and backing their career development
- Shape and deliver the technical plan for key products together with product managers and other functions
- Stay hands-on, spending 20 to 30% of your time coding, reviewing code, and designing architecture
- Steer major architecture choices so systems scale well, run fast, and remain easy to maintain
- Hold the team to a high bar on testing, documentation, and clean code
What they're looking for
- 7 to 15 years of software engineering experience, including leading engineers
- Product sense and the willingness to keep writing code as a manager
- A genuine passion for mentoring and growing engineers
- Familiarity with a stack like Java, TypeScript, React, PostgreSQL, AWS, Docker, and Terraform
