JD — the work
About the role
You would be an early engineer at an AI-native insurance startup at the seed stage, working on a large and underserved part of the market. This is real product ownership rather than a backlog: you'd decide what is worth building based on direct conversations with business customers. The founders combine decades of leadership in AI and engineering with senior insurance experience at a company that grew and went public. Expect a long-term build in one of the least digitized areas of the economy, hybrid from a Bay Area office four days a week.
What you'll do
- Take new products to live users: define the problem, make the architecture calls, and own the customer-facing surface
- Build across a Python and FastAPI backend and a TypeScript and React frontend
- Design with LLMs and agents at the core, and engineer around their failure points for reliable results
- Own outcomes end to end in a small, flat team moving quickly in a regulated domain
- Talk with customers directly to decide what to build next
What they're looking for
- 3+ years of full-stack engineering in Python and TypeScript/React, including AI or LLM-powered products
- LLMs or agents shipped in production, beyond experiments
- Experience beyond pure IC work, such as tech leadership, managing engineers, or joining early at a startup that grew
- Independence in turning what customers ask for into a clear definition of success
- US work authorization; visa sponsorship is not available
- No degree requirement; you are judged on experience and shipping record
Nice to have
- Exposure to proptech, fintech, insurance, or other regulated, operations-heavy businesses
- Owning system architecture: designing services, weighing tradeoffs, running infrastructure
- An early product, engineering, or engineering-management role at a venture-backed startup, owning product and architecture
- Bay Area resident or open to relocating
