JD — the work
About the role
You would lead engineering as a player-coach, shaping technical direction and the product roadmap at an early-stage company while still writing code yourself. You would own every software product, from internal analysis tools to patient and physician portals, plus the data pipelines behind deep molecular profiling, including single-cell analysis, transcriptomics, and whole exome sequencing. The engineering team is one person today, so you would build it, working closely with the CEO, scientific leadership, and computational biologists.
What you'll do
- Set technical strategy and the roadmap together with the founders and scientific leadership
- Take every software product from idea to launch, including in-house analysis tools and portals for patients and physicians
- Build the team up from one engineer, with lean workflows, a strong culture, and a solid hiring process
- Write code, review pull requests, and make the key architecture calls
- Develop the pipelines and data systems behind multi-omic tumor profiling
- Build tools with PhD scientists and computational biologists that speed up research and patient workups
- Advise the CEO and founders on where engineering effort and money should go
What they're looking for
- 6+ years as a software engineer
- At least 2 to 3 years leading engineering teams of three or more
- Comfort setting product and technical direction for a young company while still writing code
- Familiarity with Python, TypeScript, React, FastAPI, PostgreSQL, and AWS or GCP
Nice to have
- Background in genomics, bioinformatics, or the broader life sciences
