JD — the work
About the role
You would take mechanical subsystems from first concept to a functioning prototype on autonomous robots that operate in real data center environments. Design, fabrication, and iteration all happen in-house, so the role is split between computer-aided design and hands-on shop work: sketching, fabricating, testing to failure, and refining real hardware. The team is small, in person, and works in intense sprints when projects call for it. It suits someone whose portfolio shows full systems carried from idea to physical build.
What you'll do
- Lead the design of mechanical subsystems, deciding on tolerances, materials, and how each part gets made
- Create CAD models of components and assemblies, checking them with FEA and hand math, built for quick fabrication
- Fabricate your own prototypes on CNC machines, 3D printers, and general shop equipment
- Bring together mechanics, actuators, sensors, motors, and electronics on the arms and mobile platforms
- Partner with robotics, software, and electrical engineers to assemble full autonomous systems ready for production deployment
What they're looking for
- 2 to 5 years of mechanical design experience on robots or other physical products
- A portfolio showing whole systems you carried from idea to working hardware
- Strong CAD skills backed by FEA and hand calculations
- Hands-on fabrication skill with 3D printing, CNC machining, and shop tools
- Experience integrating motors, sensors, and actuators into mechanical designs
