JD — the work
About the role
You would own and contribute across a broad software system that spans edge hardware, backend services, models, and user interfaces, all built for the company's own machine shops. Working with manufacturing engineers and shop staff such as quality inspectors, CNC operators, and CAM programmers, you'd take products from requirements through deployment. The team is small, made up of generalists, and building an engineering function from the ground up in the age of AI agents, with demanding standards on craft, speed, and ownership. It is based in New York, ideally in the office five days a week, with frequent time at the shops.
What you'll do
- Build edge data collection that connects to CNC machines, CMM inspection devices, cameras, and other sensors
- Develop the shop-floor execution system and the physical interfaces used by operators, inspectors, inventory, and shipping staff
- Build front-office systems for quoting, scheduling, invoicing, routing, and monitoring, plus a customer app for ordering parts and tracking orders
- Apply AI to manufacturability review, instant quoting, operator training, CAM toolpaths, maintenance prediction, and production planning
- Take on much of the development cycle yourself, from capturing requirements through testing and release
- Spend regular time at the shops, getting to grips with unfamiliar machines, processes, and people
What they're looking for
- 3 to 5 years as a full-stack, backend, or ML engineer
- A computer science degree is required
- Strong fundamentals with Python, TypeScript and React, Postgres, and AWS
- Comfort with infrastructure as code (OpenTofu) in a monorepo
Nice to have
- Backend engineering that has touched embedded systems or hardware
- US citizenship or a green card (ITAR), or an active Secret, TS, or TS/SCI clearance
- Some product management or UX design background, while remaining an engineer first
- Time spent in robotics, CNC, manufacturing, or another physical-world field
