JD — the work
About the role
You would own all of the electrical work on a self-driving field robot that installs foundations at large solar farms. The team is small and high-agency, building hardware from scratch and carrying it from first concept to field deployment and, later, fleet production, with a large utility-scale project already under construction. Expect founding-team ownership and real field time at a Texas pilot site, meter in hand, in heat and dust.
What you'll do
- Own the robot's whole electrical design, from power distribution and motor drives to sensors, wiring, safety circuits, and firmware
- Select and integrate actuators, sensors, motors, and drives, acting as the link between the mechanical and electrical sides
- Write real-time control code and embedded firmware, including CAN bus, microcontroller or PLC loops, telemetry, and fault handling
- Troubleshoot and find root causes on site in Texas, hardening designs against heat, dust, EMI, and vibration
- Guide the move from one prototype toward a small fleet through harness manufacturability, documentation, suppliers, and production readiness
What they're looking for
- 7+ years of electrical, mechatronics, or robotics hardware engineering
- Experience owning a machine's full electrical system, including power, motor control, and safety
- Real-time control and embedded firmware experience in C or C++
- Comfort working hands-on in harsh field conditions without supervision
- A history of taking hardware from concept to deployment
