JD — the work
About the role
You would own the architecture of a growing data platform, from how pipelines are designed to where the team invests and the judgment calls needed to keep everything dependable as more domains and stakeholders rely on it. This is not a whiteboard-only job: you would still write pipelines, debug production problems, and ship code, while making architecture decisions independently and serving as the second opinion other data engineers seek out. It is a senior individual contributor role (IC4), remote in the US.
What you'll do
- Shape how data moves from ingestion through transformation and modeling to serving, balancing freshness, cost, and simplicity
- Lead platform work on access control, warehouse spend, and efficient use of compute
- Spot long-term platform investments in orchestration, CI/CD, and developer experience before they block anyone
- Drive large or parallel cross-team projects and own their outcomes, not just delivery
- Own testing and alerting strategy for your area and handle the toughest production incidents
- Mentor data and analytics engineers and review their design and modeling decisions
- Bring AI into the team's data work through shared tooling and automation, and coach others on it
What they're looking for
- 6 to 9 years of data engineering experience
- Sound judgment on pipeline architecture trade-offs across freshness, cost, and scale
- Hands-on skill with Python, Airflow, Kubernetes, and CI/CD
- Experience leading complex technical projects that span several teams
- A record of mentoring engineers and earning respect from senior engineers on other teams
- Practical, validated use of AI in engineering workflows
