JD — the work
About the role
You would build and refine the control software that lets very large self-driving haul trucks operate safely at mines, covering steering, path tracking, localization, and lateral and longitudinal control. Remote, unstructured sites make navigation and localization unusually hard. Engineers make the key calls here, and the systems you build go into real production use; a large autonomous truck fleet is already operating, and you would help grow it.
What you'll do
- Build and tune MPC and PID controllers that cope with changing loads and slopes
- Create localization and state estimation that combines RTK GPS, IMU, and other inputs and stays robust when GPS drops out
- Debug control problems to their root cause using log replay and on-vehicle field testing
- Work with hardware, planning, and perception engineers to get controls running on production trucks
- Spend up to 15% of your time traveling to customer mine sites for testing, tuning, and deployments
What they're looking for
- 3+ years in controls for autonomous vehicles or robotics; mining experience is not required
- Hands-on with MPC and PID control, state estimation, and sensor fusion
- Strong Python and C/C++ skills for control and estimation code
- Comfort with field testing and periodic travel to remote sites
Nice to have
- Prior work on autonomy for mining equipment is a strong plus
