About the role
A hands-on player-coach role leading one of the core engineering teams: you would manage four to seven senior, staff, and principal engineers while still contributing code, and grow the team over the next year. The product uses AI to extract clean, structured data from dense tax forms for the country's biggest accounting firms, and the company was recently acquired by a large global information business. You would report to the co-founding CTO in an intense, hands-on culture where leaders ship too. The role is on-site in San Francisco.
What you'll do
- Manage four to seven staff- and principal-level engineers, growing to ten or twelve, while staying technical
- Write code, review designs, and debug hard problems every week
- Deliver AI features, measured by evals, that pull accurate data out of messy tax paperwork for enterprise clients
- Develop engineers with candid feedback, sharpen their product and technical instincts, and grow the next leaders
- Own hiring and onboarding to build a team with high talent density
- Link engineering decisions to business outcomes by working side by side with tax experts and client-facing staff
What they're looking for
- 10+ years of engineering experience, including managing senior engineers
- Still hands-on enough to write production code and debug hard problems
- Experience shipping customer-facing AI or ML products backed by rigorous evaluation
- A record of hiring and scaling high-caliber engineering teams
- Working proficiency with Python and TypeScript
