JD — the work
About the role
This staff-level role defines the architecture of infrastructure that runs very large numbers of microVMs every month across the company's own bare-metal machines around the world. The company runs CI for thousands of engineering organizations, is growing revenue quickly, and is expanding into agent sandboxes and a background coding agent, so compute capacity is set to grow severalfold. You would partner closely with the company's technical founders, going deep into kernel, filesystem, and storage work, in person in New York.
What you'll do
- Own the architecture of core infrastructure that orchestrates huge numbers of microVMs on bare metal worldwide
- Own production health, from uptime to performance to day-to-day operations, as capacity scales up sharply
- Work with the founders to convert company and product goals into multi-year technical plans
- Work deep in the kernel and filesystem layers, using cgroups, eBPF, namespaces, and I/O tuning to squeeze out performance
- Drive large, loosely defined infrastructure projects from framing the problem to delivery
- Coach senior engineers and lift technical standards team-wide
What they're looking for
- 8+ years of experience, including designing and running distributed infrastructure at very large scale
- Personal track record architecting and delivering critical systems at well-known organizations
- Hands-on kernel work on bare-metal servers, plus virtualization and distributed storage expertise
- Evidence that, as a senior IC, you have reshaped where an engineering team was heading
- Proficiency in Go, Rust, or C/C++
Nice to have
- Joined a fast-growing startup early and saw it become widely recognized
- Systems research papers, patents, or conference presentations
